The Department of Zoology was established in 1963, at Mingaladon,when first year medical students were started to accept for admission from qualified fresh matriculates.The Department was then organized with five teaching staff-one Head of the Department, one Assistant Lecturer and three Demonstrators, and with two laboratory staffs. In 1992,The organization of the Department was promoted to seven teaching staffs with one Lecturer and Head of the Department ,two Assistant Lecturers and four Demonstrators. After the new buildings for Premedical Departments were constructed in 1995 at North Okkalapa,the Department of Zoology has moved to the new Campus of the Institute of Medicine2,now standing at the North Okkalapa Township,Yangon.
In 2002,the organization of the Department was promoted to 34 teaching staffs with one Lecturer and Head of the Department,three Lecturers,ten Assistant Lecturers and twenty Demonstrators.

Aims
The student should acquire prerequisite knowledge, skill and attitude for basic medical studies and develop learning behavior suitable for continuing medical education.
