Departmental Objectives
At the end of the course, the medical students should be able to,
(1) understand the concept of Child Health.
(2) recognize the major components of Child Health.
(3) have a requisite knowledge of common diseases of childhood in Myanmar and their management

(2) have a requisite skill in basic sciences of community health in approaching the child in the community

Final Part I MBBS
The course covers 10 weeks of clinical teaching in North Okkalapa General Hospital and Yankin Children Hoispital.

Final Part I MBBS Assessment
The assessment is a 2- station (1 history taking and 1 clinical examination) OSCE at the end of 10 weeks posting. This class work weightage will be 10% of the marks of Final Part II Final Examination.
Final Part II MBBS
Pre bloc posting during initial 6 months involves didactic lectures from all 4 disciplines. Bloc posting last 3 months in three medical units of Yankin Children Hospital. Morning section includes clinical teaching such as ward round teaching and small group bedside teaching and self-learning. Evening section includes clinics, case discussion, question time and seminar. Pediatric topics covers growth and development, nutritional disorders, neonatology, infectious diseases emphasizing on the diseases of common health problems in developing countries such as acute respiratory tract infection, diarrhoeal disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever, tuberculosis, malaria etc. systemic disorders, preventive and community pediatrics, pediatric prescribing and pediatric emergencies including ETAT (Emergency triage assessment and treatment).
Internship Training (House Officer)
House officers are posted to the affiliated teaching hospitals for their training. The training period covers one year as rotating house officer between 4 major disciplines (3 months per discipline) and includes 2 weeks of community medicine work. Assessment is by means of a common log book and workplace based assessment in all disciplines and a completion certificate signed by Heads of the major disciplines, reviewed by the Rector of the Institute before convocation.
Objectives
At the end of the course of instruction, House Officers must
1.1 principles of difference between child and adults.
1.2 principles of normal development and its variations
1.3 essential facts about common medical problems in childhood.
1.4 management of childhood problems using primary health care approach.
2.1 communicating with the healthy and sick newborn babies,
infant, children and their parents.
2.2 taking careful history.
2.3 performing thorough physical examination of all systems.
2.4 performing simple bed side procedures and laboratory procedures.
2.5 recognizing urgent cases that require referral
2.6 managing of common childhood problems, disorders and pediatric emergencies.
2.7 practicing preventive aspects of child health.

Dr.Med.Sc. (Pediatrics) Course
Aim
The aim of the course is to produce highly qualified clinicians, academicians and researchers equipped with knowledge and skill comparable to international standard. They must have attitudinal concepts fit to be a leading pediatrician.

Selection of Candidates
Criteria for Application
1.Must be a citizen of Union of Myanmar
2.Must be a holder of M.B.,B.S and M.Med.Sc (Pediatrics) (2 years after M.Med.Sc(Pediatrics)) or equivalent degree recognized by Myanmar Medical Council.
Selection Examination
Must pass Selection Examination, both written and oral (viva voce), conducted by the Selection Board for Postgraduate Studies, University of Medicines. Selection theory examination will consist of 4 MSQs.

Learning Teaching Method
Work based learning with research work including submission of thesis.
Protocol should be submitted in Year 1. Thesis should be submitted in Year 3 (3 months ahead of end of Year 3). Thesis defend should be done in last month of Year 3.

To assess the communication skill and ethics, a case scenario or real case will be given.

Area 3
Viva questions on recent advances regarding his/her thesis.
Maximum scores for each area – 100 (Total score 300)
Pass mark: 60% of total marks.

M.Med.Sc. (Pediatrics) Course
Aims
The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive training in pediatrics so as to prepare the trainee with a foundation up to a standard competent enough to become a pediatric specialist, a senior teacher in Pediatrics, or a research worker.
Objectives
- Strengthen the knowledge of basic medical science and principles of Pediatrics (Knowledge)
- Train the candidates to have a competent skill in diagnosis and management of childhood disorders (Skill)
- Stress the importance of the family and its environment in the development of childhood disorder (Attitude)
- Impart basic research methodology so as to obtain and share more relevant information on the clinical materials.

Selection of Candidates
Criteria for application
The candidate must have an MBBS degree from one of the Universities of Medicine in Myanmar or an equivalent degree recognized by the Myanmar Medical Council.
Selection of Examination
The candidate must pass a selection examination held by the Selection Board of Postgraduate Studies, from the respective University of Medicine, which includes the professor/heads of the Department of Pediatrics.

Dissertation
The candidates must submit the protocols of their research project before the third month of the second year (for approval). The Post – graduate Board of Study will then scrutinize and choose the appropriate supervisor. Any further change after this must be done with the agreement of the Board. Supervisor has to report the progress of dissertation to the chairman of the Board every 3 months.
Final submission of the dissertation will be made not later than the last 3 months of the third year period (before the final examination).
Evaluation
Summative Assessment
Summative assessment (I) – Part (I) Examination –
At the end of 9-month, summative assessment will be done by 60 MCQ questions within 2 1/2 hours. Pass mark is 60%. If the candidate fails, he/she will be allowed to appear for 2 more supplementary exams which will be held every 3 months.
Summative assessment (II) – Part (II) Examination –
will be held at the end of 3-year period.
Theory paper – (10) Data interpretation including ECG (45 minutes)
Grey cases (50 minutes)
Picture quiz including X-ray (40 minutes)
Total time – 2 hours 15 minutes
Clinical – One long case and 4 short cases
Long case — (1 hour assessing the patient + 30-minute discussion with examiners)
Short case major 2 — 10 minutes each
minor 2 — 5 minutes each
Viva voce
Another pair of examiners, will assess the candidates on at least 4 topics out of the following: Neonatology, Pediatric emergencies, recent trends and advances, community pediatrics, developmental pediatrics. Time limit for 25 minutes.
Pass mark for each section is 60%. The candidates must have a minimum of 60% for each section i.e. written, clinical (both long and short cases combined) and viva voce, for a clear pass. Distinction will be given to candidates who score more than 80% and credit will be given to candidates who score more than 75% in each section.
Assessment of dissertation
The dissertation will be separately evaluated by 2 readers chosen by the Board of Study. It will be accepted as final only after the correction recommended by the readers has been fulfilled.
The pass mark, credit and distinction marks are 60%, 75% and 80% respectively.
Dissertation which fails to get the pass mark will have to be rewritten until satisfactory mark is given by the reader.
Dip.Med.Sc. (Family Medicine) Course
