Professor and Head

The teaching of Forensic Medicine in the Final Part I, M.B.,B.S at the Institute of Medicine (2),Yangon started in 1966 by a visiting lecturer, Dr Maung Maung Taik, M.B.,B.S (Lucknow), BL (Rgn), who was the Head of Department of Forensic Medicine at the Institute of Medicine (1), Yangon.

In 1967, an Assistant Lecturer, Dr Bah Choon was appointed as the Head of Department Forensic Medicine at the Institute of Medicine (2), together with two demonstrators. Post-mortem demonstration classes were then held at the Police Surgeon’s Office, Yangon General Hospital but now they are being held at the Police Surgeon’s Office, North Okkalapa General Hospital.

In 1982, Dr Bah Choon was transferred to the Institute of Medicine (1) as Head of Department and Dr David Kyaw, a Lecturer, became the Head of Department at the Institute of Medicine (2). When Dr David Kyaw was promoted and transferred to the Institute of Medicine (1) as Professor and Head of Department in January 1993, Dr Thein Zaw, a Lecturer, became the Head of the Department. In 1997, a Professorial chair in Forensic Medicine was established and      Dr Thein Zaw became the first Professor in Forensic Medicine at Institute of Medicine (2). In 2003, Professor Dr Thein Zaw was transferred as the Professor and Head of Department of Forensic Medicine, Institute of Medicine (1), and Dr Win Kyi became Associate Professor and Head of Department of Forensic Medicine, University of Medicine (2).

In 2006, Dr Win Kyi was promoted as a Professor and the Head of the Department. In July 2011, Professor Win Kyi was transferred to University of Medicine (1) as a Head of Department of Forensic Medicine and Professor Aung Soe became Professor and Head of Department from 2011 to 2021. Professor Zaw Zaw Oo served as Head of Department from January 2022 to November 2024. The current head of Department is Professor Chan Myae Thein since November 2024.
