Brief HIstory Of Department

The history of the department dates back to 1963, when University of Medicine, 2 Yangon was inaugurated. Professor Dr U Hla Thein headed the newly formed Department of Pathology. To date ten professors have headed the department. Professor  Daw Nyo Me May Thyn is the present head of the department since August 2020.

General Pathology and Systemic Pathology are taught to undergraduate 3rd M.B., B.S and Final part 1 M.B., B.S students since 1965.

A post – graduate course of Master of Medical Science (Pathology) has been introduced in 1995 and to date 95 candidates have graduated and 8 candidates are taking the course. A doctorate course was introduced in 1999. The first candidate had graduated in 2002. This was followed by 24 respective candidates eligible for doctoral degree. At the moment seven candidates are doing research work leading to a doctoral degree.

Since 2019, first batch of Doctorate (Haematopathology0 was started and followed by Doctorate course for Histopathology, Haematopathology, Chemical Pathology to date. Now two Dr (Haematopathology) candidates are taking the course. (4/2019 batch and 1/2020 batch)

The department contributes Clinical Pathology services at Department at the University of Medicine 2, Yangon and main teaching hospital i.e. North Okkalapa General and Teaching hospital (NOGTH)  since 1998. Both had been integrated and the head of the department and all pathologists contribute in diagnosis, teaching and research works of postgraduate courses.

The Defense Service General Hospital had been the main teaching hospital when the University was located in Mingaladon township till 1970 when North Okkalapa General and Teaching Hospital was opened. At present, the list of  affiliated hospitals has extended including Thingangyun  Sanpya General Hospital and Insein General Hospital. Now, The University campus is located in North Okkalapa since 1996.

The department is engaged in several research works in the various Clinical Pathology disciplines. In addition to research projects undertaken by master & doctorate students, the department also has several departmental research works as well as research in collaboration with other departments in the University and other Universities both national and international.

Aim and Objectives

At the end of the course, the learner should be able to demonstrate:

  • comprehension of deviations from normal structure and functions in relation to the health of individual and community so as to enable the development of a management plan.
  • understanding of the impact of the disease process on the individual, family and the community, the behavioral responses in each case to such illness and the principles of intervention.
  • a critical understanding of the plans and programs of the health sector and other sectors to meet the health problems of individual, family and community.
  • ability to conduct appropriate physical, biochemical, pathological and microbiological tests and investigations to detect the deviation from the normal structure and functions.
  • understanding of the specific changes in organs and organ systems caused by aging, trauma, stress, bacteria, viruses, chemicals and drugs and the basic principles of managing these deviations.
  • requisite knowledge and skills to undertake the responsibilities of the medical profession and medical practice in relation to the law.
  • interest and ability to educate the individual patients, their families and the community in matters related to health promotion and disease prevention and disability rehabilitation.
  • self reliance in planning his own learning, problem solving abilities and critical thinking as shown by his own behavior and
  • an awareness of medicine as a continuum of the normal, deviations from normal and the correction of deviations, with the greatest emphasis on deviations from normal in this course.

Knowledge

At the end of the courses of instruction, the learner should be able to:

  • acquire the knowledge of the pathologic basis of diseases with emphasis on common diseases prevalent in Myanmar.
  • describe the morphology of gross specimens of common diseases and arrive at the correct diagnosis.
  • describe the histological and hematological features of common diseases and arrive at the correct diagnosis.
  • explain the principles of immunity and hypersensitivity with regards to pathogenesis of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Skill

interpret the laboratory data correctly.

Attitiude

  • appreciate that pathology forms the basis of all branches of clinical medicine.
  • appreciate the importance of laboratory findings for the correct diagnosis and proper management of diseases including common communicable and non-communicable diseases.
  • appreciate that the acquired knowledge of etiology and pathogenesis of diseases, could be utilized for prevention of certain diseases.

Final Part I MBBS

At the end of the courses of instruction, the learner should be able to:

Knowledge

(1) acquire the knowledge of the pathologic basis of diseases with emphasis on common diseases   prevalent in Myanmar.

(2) effectively correlate the laboratory data with the clinical manifestations.

(3) describe the morphology of gross specimens of common diseases and arrive at the correct  diagnosis.

(4) describe the histological and hematological features of common diseases and arrive at the  correct diagnosis.

(5) effectively correlate between the clinical manifestations and autopsy findings.

(6) describe the hematological disorders common in Myanmar with emphasis on preventive  measures.

Skill

  • demonstrate/ perform certain basic hematological laboratory procedures.
  • interpret the laboratory data correctly.

Attitude

(1)  appreciate that pathology forms the basis of all branches of clinical medicine.

(2) appreciate the importance of laboratory findings for the correct diagnosis and proper management of diseases.
