Department of Radiology was a sub-specialty department under the Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Medicine 2, from 1970 to year 2002. In those days, the heads of the departments of Radiology, North Okkalapa General Hospital took responsibility to practice the radiological diagnosis and to teach radiology for M.B.,B.S final part II students (in old curriculum), for MBBS final part I students (in old curriculum) and for M.B.,B.S final part II students ( in new curriculum). At the time of beginning radiology department had only Conventional X-ray machines and ultrasound.
In the year 2002, the Department of Radiology was upgraded to an independent faculty of Institute of Medicine 2. Full time teaching staffs had been appointed and Dr. Daw Khin Aye Thi was the first professor and head of the Department of Radiology.
The first batch of master course M.Med.Sc (Radiology) was started on 2002 and received two candidates. In the same year, doctoral course Dr.Med.Sc (Radiology) was also started and two candidates attended to that course.
From 2014 to 2016, diploma course was opened and last diploma course was ended in 2017. The University awarded to those Diploma candidates as title of “Dip.Med.Sc (Radiology)”, (Diploma in Medical Science, Radiology).
Up to 2019 December, The 15 candidates (3rd Batch) were awarded as diploma, 94 candidates (15th Batch) were awarded as master degree and 13 candidates (6th Batch) were awarded as doctorate degree, Radiology up to now and 46 master candidates and 5 doctorate candidates are still on the training.
In 2016, old department was transformed to new building named as Imaging Complex and upgraded with new advanced machines (CR & DR X-ray machines, Fluoroscopy X ray unit, 128 Slice CT and 1.5 Tesla MRI, Digital Mammography, DXA Scan) in 2016.
24 hours service was carried out in 2018 at Accidents and Emergency Department. At the same time 128 slice CT was installed in A&E Department.
Now, Professor Dr Nu Nu Aye is taking the responsibility of the head of department of Radiology, University of Medicine 2, North Okkalapa Teaching and General Hospital.
